Nominees for the Military Society of America Book Awards for 2009 were announced by MWSA president Joyce Faulkner, founder Bill McDonald, lead reviewer Rob Ballister, award-winning author, Richard Lowry, and Veterans Radio host Dale Throneberry at http://www.veteransradio.net/ on August 29, 2009. Recently, I was watching television and listening to the speeches of the candidates. I thought to myself. We are in very exciting time in history. The candidates are both making history for themselves and their family. I thought about the legacy they will each leave for their families. Win or Lose they have crossed a threshold in their lives few every achieve. I think it is so important that we all consider the legacy we are going to leave our families and cross the threshold of obstacles that would challenge us to settle for the unfulfilled goals and dreams in life.

Another Soldier takes his rest

A couple of weeks ago. I was shocked by the news that a very special relative had passed away. I packed my bags and journeyed to his Funeral. He was a Vietnam vet. and was given full military honors at the national Military cemetry where he was laid to rest. As I looked at the perfectly aligned headstones, I felt like I was in the presence of great royalty. I cannot say "Thank You" enough to the men and women who have served and are still serving our country.

Independence Day, is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, baseball games, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States, but is often also viewed as simply a summer festival, with patriotic overtones. As you gather with family and friends to enjoy good food and fireworks, say a prayer for the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan for whom the 4th of July will be spent listening to a different kind of fireworks. Bombs bursting in air for them has another meaning.

Well, the book signing at Patrick Air Force Base was a success. It was an opportunity to not only sign books, it was also an opportunity to connect with other military families and hear their stories about deployment. The staff at Patrick Air Force Base, Base Exchange was so helpful and supportive of me. The staff made sure I had everything I needed to make my book signing a success.

The book signing and fundraiser was a huge success. I was so honored to be able to bless the soldiers and families at the Fisher House in Tampa, Fl. Many soldiers at the James A. Haley Veteran Hospital in Tampa are recovering from brain and head injuries sustained in combat. Those who attended the book signing gave very generously to the Fundraiser to help these very deserving families.

Christmas 2007

This was perhaps the most meaningful and memorable Christmas ever. I spent Christmas with my daughter who lives in another state. After watching a segment on the local news about soldiers going to Iraq on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, we decided to go to the airport and show our support. After we opened our gifts on Christmas morning, we jumped into our car and headed to the airport. It was a cold, rainy, dreary day and the airport was full of holiday travelers. We positioned ourselves near the USO so we could see the soldiers going to their waiting area . As the soldiers stepped onto the escalator, my daughters and I gave them each a pencil for letter writing, and thanked them for their service to our country. The faces of the soldiers' lit up with gratitude. One soldier in particular looked at us and said, "Thank you for being here today, I am so glad you are here." Another soldier said, thank you, you will never know how much this means to me today." As the soldiers left the USO, everyone in the atrium of the airport stood and applauded the soldiers as they went to board their flight. My heart was filled with both sadness and pride. Sadness,because these young men and women were going to a war zone on Christmas day. Pride, because they were willing to give up their Christmas, so I could enjoy Christmas with my family. Wow, what a sacrifice. If you see a service member wandering in the airport this Christmas season. Please stop and say, Thank You......

Today, as we remember and salute the men and women of the armed forced. I am extremely grateful and proud to be a military spouse. My husband has fought in two wars and I have four uncles who have served in the military as well. Three of my uncles served in Vietnam. Last year, one of my uncles passed away. As I watched the bugler play taps at the cemetery, my grief was replaced with such pride. As I watched to flag being folded and presented to his widow, I wondered how many of the mourner really understood and appreciated what he did for our country. If you have a veteran in your family or if you know a veteran give them a call today and thank them for their service to our nation. It might be only thanks they will ever receive.
